History of Art & Architecture Formally Joins AMS
We are pleased to announce that on October 3, 2011, UCSB's Graduate Council approved the addition of Art History & Architecture to the list of participating AMS departments. The Graduate Council approval formalizes many years of active participation in the AMS community by faculty and graduate students from Art History & Architecture. We look forward to continued interdisciplinary cooperation in the years to come!
UCSB hosts UC Multi-Campus Research Group on Ancient Borderlands
Led by Prof. Elizabeth Digeser (UCSB History), the UC Multi-Campus Research Group (MRG) on Ancient Borderlands brings together faculty and graduate students from across the UC system for a year of research colloquiua and presentations. After a successful winter meeting on January 28, the Multi-Campus Research Group will
hold its spring meeting on April 15, 2012 in conjunction with the Third Biennial Ancient Borderlands Graduate Student conference (April 13-15).
About Ancient Mediterranean Studies at UCSB
Ancient Mediterranean Studies (AMS) is an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Emphasis program that offers graduate students the opportunity to bridge the traditional disciplinary borders of fields constituting this area of Study. AMS embraces scholares from the departments of Anthropology, the History of Art & Architecture, Classics, History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Our focus is the circum-Mediterranean worldfrom roughly the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages.
The curriculum allows students to prepare themselves for innovation and success in the university, since most models for the future viability of the humanities depend on an interdisciplinary model of active cooperation across departments. The heart of the Ancient Mediterranean Studies program is the core seminar that runs bi-weekly throughout the academic year and features presentations by faculty, students, and visiting scholars.
Through AMS, any student already resident in the Ph.D. program of one of the participating departments can incorporate into their program of study the extensive course offerings and the broad range of faculty in this area, and engage in a lively dialogue with students across diverse disciplines.
The Ancient Mediterranean Studies program is closely linked to the Ancient Borderlands Research Focus Group of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, which is open to all faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates at UCSB. We encourage interested faculty and students to attend the seminar meetings, and to consider joining AMS.
